Boca West Children’s Foundation Enables 1,200 Low Income Kids to Attend Summer Camp

BOCA RATON, Fla., July 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Boca West Children’s Foundation, which provides grants and volunteers to 25 local non-profit children’s organizations, is providing funding, as well as instructors and volunteers, so that 1,200 underserved kids can attend six different summer programs.

The summer programs include a five-week tennis camp held at Boca West Country Club, a two-week golf program, also held at the Club, called Hook A Kid On Golf, FAU’s Summer Band Camp, Summer Strings at Lynn University, Camp Wewa, Camp KAVOD, which serves disabled kids and Ball Stars Youth Camp, a basketball camp run by former NBA players.

“Camps and after school programs funded by Boca West Children's Foundation make a real difference in the lives of the kids that attend. The Foundation does a great job of providing underserved kids with the opportunity to attend fun learning activities during the summer, which helps us keep these kids out of gangs in Palm Beach County,” Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

Safe Sun Foundation, a local non-profit led by Fran Nachlas, donated hats and sun protection for the golf, tennis, and sleep-away camps.  Yvonne & Don Ackerman provided sleeping bags to the children attending sleep away camp.

More than 200 children from the Wayne Barton Study Center, Boys & Girls Club, Caridad Center and Florence Fuller Child Development Centers (East and West campuses) are attending tennis camp at Boca West Country Club’s tennis center this summer. Each child will receive new tennis shoes, an outfit and lunch each day.

Hook A Kid On Golf, America’s most comprehensive national youth golf program, will introduce 25 kids from the Wayne Barton Study Center and 25 kids from the Boys & Girls Club to golf.  Kids from both organizations will attend a weeklong golf camp at Boca West Country Club during July.  Children will receive golf instruction from Boca West Country Club’s golf pros, a t-shirt and a hat. Lunch will be provided by the club each day.

“Being able to provide the comfort of a warm, good night's sleep to a child and a sense of emotional safety is my way of letting them know they are cared for and loved. It is my way of sharing what I know was a blessed life and paying it forward," Yvonne Ackerman said.

Boca West Children’s Foundation is also sponsoring two music camp programs for children at risk. Because of this funding, the FAU’s Summer Band Camp will host 200 economically disadvantaged students, and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope Summer Strings Program will be able to send 200 students to spend a week with students of the Lynn University Philharmonia.

The Foundation is also sponsoring 160 “camperships” to allow children from the Boys & Girls Club and SOS Children Villages to go to sleep away camp at Camp Winona and Camp Wewa, each affiliated with the YMCA. Each participant will receive swim goggles, a sleeping bag and duffle bag.
