UK Signs Historic Chagos Deal With Mauritius; Cedes Control, But Retains Military Base

In a landmark move, the UK has signed an agreement to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius while retaining a key military base on Diego Garcia for £101 million a year. Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the deal as a strategic necessity, citing rising legal risks and military value. The agreement includes a 99-year lease, a £40 million trust for displaced Chagossians, and was praised by US leaders including Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Watch
