Minnesota farmer says harvest is “rounding third and headed for home”

A farmer in south-central Minnesota uses baseball terminology to describe harvest progress.

“Harvest is going good, we’re rounding third and heading home.”

That’s Larry Baumgardt, who farms south of Buffalo Lake.

He says snow has slowed down the combine.

“I suppose we’ve got about 15 percent of our crop out yet, and there’s some corn out there. But hey, it’s still October. We’re doing good.”

Baumgardt says soybean yields averaged in the mid 60’s and corn that wasn’t damaged by hail is consistently 220 or higher.

And while the snow pushed harvest equipment to the sideline, tillage work continues.

“We’ve been non-stop, 24 hours (a day). We did all our bean and sugarbeet ground with snow on top of it. It worked good.”

Baumgardt says with their quadtrac tractor, they haven’t been spinning out much on the snow.
