The Russian military appears to be renovating a bunker to act as a nuclear weapons storage site close to the Polish border, according to a Monday report by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS).

FAS examined satellite images provided by commercial satellite imagery companies Digital Globe and TerraServer and determined that the underground bunker was being renovated for at least two years. Beginning in 2016, the bunker was excavated and renovated and then re-covered in 2018, according to the report written by FAS Nuclear Information Project director Hans Kristensen.

Although it cannot be confirmed what the purpose of the bunker is since satellite imagery doesn’t show what’s inside, Kristensen said there are clues that indicate it will be a storage site for nuclear weaponry.

“There are indirect indications such as the degree of security perimeters (they are much denser at nuclear sites) and support vehicles moving in and out of the site,” he told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The U.S. has involvement through NATO to defend the Baltic States and Poland, which both border the region Kaliningrad, where the bunker was identified. The discovery of the bunker reaffirms the presence of nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe.

The U.S. already has non-strategic nuclear weapons forward-deployed in Europe, with the closest about 600 miles from the Russian bunker, Kristensen said. (RELATED: Fears Grow Over Russia’s Dangerous Nuclear Escalation)

The U.S. is currently reviewing measures to ramp up forces in Poland to counter Russia’s growing military efforts. Aside from the bunker, Moscow has increased air defense and missile systems in Kaliningrad in the past few years, according to reports by Stars and Stripes.
