Depression in south-west of Sri Lanka develops in to a deep depression

Nov 30, 2017 (LBO) – Met Department today said the depression in the south-west of Sri Lanka has developed in to a deep depression and it is located 200 km away from Colombo. The department added that it is expected to develop further and move to the Arabian Sea area. Colombo Municipal Council has opened 110 hotline to report fallen trees while Disaster Management Centre has launched 117 hotline number to report disasters in the island. Education Minister said Schools in Western, Southern, Central & Uva provinces will be closed today due to bad weather condition. Met Department said Heavy rains and gusty strong winds (about 60-70 kmph) can be expected over the island, and heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas can be expected further in the deep and shallow sea areas around the island too. Showers or thundershowers will occur most parts of the island. Very heavy falls (about100-150mm) can be also expected at some places in the Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Western and Uva provinces. Winds will be anticlockwise in direction in the sea area around the island and wind speed will be 50-60 kmph. The sea area around the island will be rough and, the Western and Southern sea areas can be very rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 90-100 kmph at times. Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regards. People living in downstream of Nilwala, Gin and Kalu River has asked to be vigilant due to minor flooding level. Police said Colombo - Badulla main road has obstructed for traffic due to collapsing of a soil embankment at Beragala. Train services on upcountry line from Badulla to Nanu Oya and Kelani Valley line from Avissawella to Kottawa has disrupted due to fallen trees. National Building Research Organization has issued landslide warnings for Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala and Matale districts. Power failures are reported in several areas in the island affected by the adverse weather condition.
